Wash
The road not
taken yet abides!
Christian Wiman
Note in the Margin of Moby-Dick
The way a ring,
this Claddagh
say, slides its
hands inside
to lean penitent
to the back of the pew
of the skin of
the littlest
finger &
remain tucked there
unselfconsciously
hiding a side
of itself a kind
of maintenance like
and not minding the
mildest
or most jerky
bringing to
alignment the
crown limning
compass true to
the knuckle though
only for a moment
of perk
comes sweat &
swell comes
handshake &
handwash comes taking
off for garlic
for fish-flesh
for all raw and
phosphorescent
scents. And so.
The naked
hand is temporarily
weightless of
its commitment
& will wash its body alone
and touch it with
the tenderest
of tenderness.
